VOLUNTEER COACH: KRISTINE DOYLE

Kristine is the new Supervisor and Instructor at the Smithfield Horse Center. Kristine will also be a Volunteer Coach for the team. Kristine competed in IHSA Western competition while in college at the University of Illinois at Champaigne. We are happy she has agreed to work with us and share her knowledge of IHSA competition.

The team was mainly formed by two ambitious students wanting to bring some "cowboy" flare to the hunter-dressage-dominated school. Sarah Barlow from Mineral, VA, and Ben Craig from Raleigh, NC. started the first intercollegiate western team in Virginia. In an effort to generate interest, Barlow and Craig sent dozens of emails to students, alumni, and faculty. Once people became aware of the team, everything fell into place. The Western Team is part of the Equestrian Club and the Recreational Sports Club Department at Virginia Tech.

Ben Craig is the Western Team's Team Captain (pictured above) with his APHA mare JustCallMeDawn.

Intercollegiate Horse Show Association's western shows are the ultimate test of horsemanship. Riders arrive at the host college's show and draw a horse from a hat to ride. Riders are not given any time to warm up or get to know their mount before they are ushered into the show ring before an AQHA judge. IHSA is designed this way so that it's a level playing field for all riders and the best riders are placed, not necessarily which people have the best trained horses. Riders in the Beginner and Intermediate classes are strictly walk - jog rail classes, whereas the upper levels must also lope and perform a horsemanship pattern. Open riders compete in both horsemanship and reining. For more information on the IHSA, log-on to: www.ihsainc.com

If you are interested in learning more about the team or would like to contribute to the team in any way, please feel free to contact us. Keep in mind that any donations made to Virginia Tech are tax-deductible!
