How can I ride on Tech's IHSA or IDA team?
In order to be eligible to compete on Tech's IHSA or IDA riding team, an individual must be enrolled in an equitation class. The equitation classes are part of the Animal and Poultry Science Department and are taught by our coach Teresa McDonald. The classes cost $500 per semester and meet twice a week. Students have lessons on different Tech horses and work on the flat and over fences to improve their equitation.
In addition, you must:
- Register with IHSA or IDA and pay their membership dues (we will go into more detail with this at the first Equestrian Club meeting of each semester)
- Attend all Equestrian Club meetings (excused 2) and complete your points requirements (we will go into more detail with the points system at the meetings)
- Attend mandatory events which include being active on at least two committees for the VT IHSA and SWVHJA Benefit Show (fall) and IHSA Western Show and IDA Dressage Show (spring).
- Any conflicts with attendance should be emailed to your team captain beforehand or you are considered unexcused. If deemed appropriate in the eyes of the Team Captains, make up work may be assigned.
For more information about joining an equitation class, please contact Teresa McDonald
How can I ride on Tech's IHSA Western team?
The IHSA Western team is run differently from the IHSA or IDA teams. You are not required to join an equitation class at Virginia Tech in order to compete on the Western Team.
In addition, you must:
- Register with IHSA and pay their membership dues (we will go into more detail with this at the first Equestrian Club meeting of each semester)
- Attend all Equestrian Club meetings (excused 2) and complete your points requirements (we will go into more detail with the points system at the meetings)
- Attend all mandatory events which include being active on at least two committees for the VT IHSA and SWVHJA Benefit Show (fall) and IHSA Western Show and IDA Dressage Show (spring).
- Any conflicts with attendance should be emailed to your team captain beforehand or you are considered unexcused. If deemed appropriate in the eyes of the Team Captains, make up work may be assigned.
For more information about joining the western team, please contact Sarah Barlow or Ben Craig
To join one of our equitation classes, you must:
- Sign up for the class you want online during registration.
- Then, a few weeks later, all the students who signed up for an equitation class will be assigned a lottery number and must show up on the assigned day in Litton Reeves and wait in line to pay for their class according to their lottery number.
Riding on any team is an awesome experience. If you are at all interested, please come by the barn or email us to find out how you can become involved!
