how to join the IHSA/IDA teamhow to join the IHSA Western teamhow to enter an equitation class

In order to be eligible to compete on Tech's IHSA or IDA riding team, an individual must be enrolled in an equitation class. The equitation classes are part of the Animal and Poultry Science Department and are taught by our coach Teresa McDonald. The classes cost $500 per semester and meet twice a week. Students have lessons on different Tech horses and work on the flat and over fences to improve their equitation.

The IHSA Western team is run differently from the IHSA or IDA teams. You are not required to join an equitation class at Virginia Tech in order to compete on the Western Team.

  • Sign up for the class you want online during registration.
  • Then, a few weeks later, all the students who signed up for an equitation class will be assigned a lottery number and must show up on the assigned day in Litton Reeves and wait in line to pay for their class according to their lottery number.
